Earth is currently in the midst of a mass extinction, losing thousands of species each year, new UC Riverside research suggests.

The twisted-claw millipede Nannaria swiftae joins 16 other new species described from the Appalachian Mountains of the United States.

This new global estimate of the number of tree species is about 14% more than previous estimates of 60,000 species (2017) and 64,000 (2018).
