Most people have a love-hate relationship with burpees, I suppose. Burpees are a great workout to get the heart rate going and burn some calories, but they can get old pretty quick. Come to think of it, any repetitive body-weight exercise can get stale pretty quickly.
Anyone that’s gotten on the HIIT workout train that’s taken over the fitness scene over the last handful of years or so has done their fair share of burpees. You may consider yourself a burpee king or queen, but you’ve got nothing on Brazil’s Cassiano Rodrigues Laureano who just set the Guinness World Record for most burpees complete in an hour.
The previous record, actually set earlier this year, was 879 burpees in an hour. Laureano shattered that number by doing 951 burpees over the course of 60 minutes.
That number is absolutely insane.
While Laureano certainly had his eyes on the world record, he decided to take on this challenge for a good cause as well as a fundraising effort for his niece who was born last year with severe heart disease, according to NY Post.
Laureano is also a professional mixed martial arts fighter and explained that he was driven by a promise made to his niece.
“I don’t know when I’ll get to see them,” said Laureano, of his family he hasn’t met since moving to Singapore in May 2019. “So it’s the only thing that I can do to help … using my athleticism.”
“I’m tired”, said Laureano after completing the record at the city’s Tricolor Fight Team gym, where he teaches. “It didn’t go as smoothly as I thought it would go.”
Hats off to Laureano, I thought my workout of 50 pushups and a mile run every few days was tough. This man almost did 1,000 burpees in an hour and lived to tell the tale.
